Ringworm

Ringworm ringworm

Despite the name, ringworm is not a worm, but a dermatophyte. Dermatophytes are fungi that are commonly found on the skinand hair of animals and people. Certain dermatophytes are more common in some species than others, but many are considered zoonotic, meaning they can be transmitted from animals to people. The risk to the owners of a pet with ringworm is low, but immunocompromised individuals or those with young children should consult their physician for any precautions. Handwashing after handling the infected animal and its toys or bedding is important. Following the below environmental decontamination guidelines can help control spreading the infection and reinfection.

Decontamination Recommendations

Hard Surfaces

1. Remove debris, especially hair using a Swiffer or damp cloth

2. Wash with soap and water until visibly clean

3. After cleaning, apply a disinfectant (dilute bleach is best) and let sit 10 minutes before wiping with a disposable cloth

Between cleanings, remove debris by dusting and following with a "one step cleaner" such as disinfecting wipes

Laundry

• Store exposed laundry in a plastic bag until it can be washed

• Wash contaminated laundry separate from other laundry

• Temperature of water and addition of bleach do not affect spore removal

• Use highest water level and do not overfill the washer with bedding

• Two wash cycles are recommended

• Run a load of water only after the bedding is done to clean washing machine

• Clean out lint traps on both washer and dryer if able

Carpets

• Vacuum carpets to remove gross debris ideally with a HEPA vacuum filter

• Either use a steam cleaner or apply carpet cleaner following directions on the product.

Frequency of cleanings depends on the number of pets present, but should typically be done once to twice weekly.
